Name Origins:

The word “tzatziki” is derived from the Greek word “τζατζίκι,” which in turn may be influenced by the Turkish word “cacık.” It’s a testament to the cross-cultural influences on Mediterranean cuisine.

Tzatziki Key Ingredients:

Traditionally it is made from Greek yoghourt, cucumbers, garlic, olive oil, and fresh herbs like dill, mint, or parsley. The combination of these ingredients creates a refreshing and creamy sauce.

Health Benefits:

It is not only delicious but also offers health benefits. Yogurt is a good source of probiotics, which can promote gut health, while cucumbers are hydrating and provide vitamins and antioxidants.

Cooling Effect of Tzatziki:

It’s refreshing and cooling properties make it a popular choice in Mediterranean cuisine, particularly as a side dish to balance the heat of spicy dishes or to cool the palate on a warm day.

Accompaniment to Gyros:

It is frequently served with gyros, a popular Greek street food made with thinly sliced, seasoned meat (often lamb or chicken) served in a pita with vegetables and tzatziki.

Modern Variations of Tzatziki:

While traditional tzatziki is delightful, modern twists on the recipe include adding ingredients like grated carrots, radishes, or even avocado for a unique flavour profile.
