Nestled along Portugal’s stunning southern coast, the Algarve region is a captivating destination that combines breathtaking natural landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality. From its golden beaches and picturesque villages to its delectable cuisine and charming accommodations, the Algarve offers a delightful experience for every traveller. In this article, we will take you to the culinary journey to Algarve and recommend exceptional restaurants, I suggest  you to rent the car, as public transport in Algarve functions very poorly.

Local Food and Culinary Delights:

The Algarve boasts a diverse culinary scene that showcases the region’s abundant seafood, fresh produce, and traditional flavours. Here are some must-try dishes:

  • Cataplana de Marisco: This seafood stew is a signature Algarve dish, featuring a medley of fish, clams, shrimp, and aromatic herbs, all cooked in a distinctive clam-shaped pot called a cataplana.
  • Grilled Sardines: Savour the flavours of the Algarve’s coastline with freshly caught sardines, typically grilled and seasoned with sea salt, olive oil, and a squeeze of lemon. Don’t miss this local favourite during the summer months.
  • Fresh Seafood: The Soul of Algarvian Cuisine. The Algarve region’s location along the Atlantic coast means that fresh seafood takes center stage in its culinary repertoire. From succulent grilled sardines to aromatic seafood rice dishes, you’ll find an abundance of ocean treasures prepared with simplicity and flair.

  • Algarvian Cataplana: A Sausage Sensation. Indulge in the region’s hearty sausages, such as chouriço and linguiça. These flavorful sausages are often grilled and served as a delightful appetizer, or they can be used to infuse rich stews and rice dishes with a smoky, savory essence.
  • Arroz Algarvian: Arroz Algarvian, or Algarvian-style rice, is a comforting dish where rice is cooked in a flavorful broth, often with vegetables and seafood. It’s a celebration of the region’s bountiful produce and love for rice-based creations.
  • Dom Rodrigos: Indulge your sweet tooth with Dom Rodrigos, traditional almond and egg-based confections that are both delightful and rich in history. These small treats make for a perfect dessert or snack.
  • Almond and Fig Sweets: A Sweet Farewell. Complete your Algarvian feast with a taste of the region’s sweet delights. Almond and fig-based sweets, like marzipan and fig cakes. Those are showcase the local nuts and fruits in delectable forms that are perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth.
  • Baba de Camelo: One of my favourites. Sticky mousse in the pot, heavenly delicious.

When it comes to dining in the Algarve, you’ll find a plethora of establishments offering delectable cuisine. Here are a few noteworthy restaurants:

  • MISTER FRANGO: Located in Centre of Faro and offering delightful chicken Piri-Piri.
  • Restaurant VENEZA (Tavira): This charming family-run restaurant in Tavira is known for its authentic Algarvian dishes, such as seafood cataplana and grilled fish, served in a cosy atmosphere with attentive service.
  • BJ’S OCEAN SIDE: One of my favourites. Located on the beach of                                        Almagem  ( Praia do Almargem). To be honest, we found this restaurant by chance, we were driving around and got lost. Eventually we end up on the beach and discover this wonderful restaurant. They serve fresh, fantastic seafood and fish. ( There are some meat dishes as well). Great atmosphere, live music  and view of the sea and the beach.

  • TASCA DO PETROL (Olhão): Situated in the vibrant fishing town of Olhão, Tasca do Petrol is a popular spot for sampling fresh seafood. Feast on their catch of the day and relish the lively atmosphere of this local gem.
  • TASCA DO RICKY (Faro): Located in Faro, across the road from Faro Bus Station. It is hidden behind the buildings, but worth finding. They serve delicious Portuguese food, very friendly and not overly expensive.
